How Meditation Supports a Paradigm Shift

Jeff CarreiraPhilosophy

Many of us have discovered that profound transformation necessitates a deep shift in the paradigm we live in. In moments of deep insight we realize that we live under the influence of deeply held beliefs and assumptions that limit what is possible. What we often don’t realize is that even the part of us that knows this is often seeing from inside the same paradigm – assuming limitations that are not ultimately real.

How do we reach escape velocity and move into an entirely new world of possibility? We won’t be able to just think our way out, because our thinking is shaped by the same limits that we are trying to find our way out of.

We have been trained to assume that our experience of the world is accurate to how the world is, but it isn’t. We see the world through habits of mind that unconsciously construct a coherent picture of reality by carefully piecing together separate and disparate elements of perception. Inside this view of reality only so much is possible. Eventually we hit an invisible wall. From that point on even our most sincere efforts don’t seem to bring about the change we long for.

In order to facilitate deep and lasting transformation we must find a way to move beyond out current perception of reality into a direct and unmediated connection with it. Meditation is a time-honored practice that has allowed spiritually courageous individuals to liberate themselves from the limiting beliefs of their time for thousands of years. Many of these became cultural luminaries who have recreated the world over and over again throughout history.

When you allow habits of mind to come to rest, you open into a source of experience that is unfiltered by thought and feeling. The perspective you discover is limitless, unfathomable and free of constraint. It is the source of true creativity, inspiration and love. And it is always immediately available to us.
